HostGator has a number of FTP features that you can find through it’s control panel or cpanel. However, let’s first talk about what ftp is all about since many of our visitors are new web site building and web hosting.

In plain terms, FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is simply a way to upload and download files, pictures and pages quickly to and from your computer to your website and server. For example, I have a WordPress blog as my website, and I needed to upload this nifty WordPress plugin that had 9 files attached? No problem. Using FTP tools that HostGator provides, I was able to transfer those files to my site very quickly and easily.

HostGator FTP Accounts

First, in order to use FTP with your HostGator web hosting package, you need to access and setup your a FTP account from cpanel. The good news is that once you have a HostGator site, Hostgator automatically creates and assigns you a primary login or FTP adfress for your site.

Most likely Hostgator will give you an FTP web address that looks like an email address, but isn’t. The FTP address Hostgator assigns you will look something like this variation: ftp.domain.com.

Secondly, if you are not real sure about all this FTP stuff, or where to access your FTP account, simply ask Hostagtor support and they will guide you through the process in your control panel. That’s why they get get paid the big bucks. I had to do that the first (and second) time I used FTP too, and it’s really a snap.

HostGator FTP Features

* FTP Accounts
Here you can create more than one account for yourself (if you have sub-domains) or for other FTP users on your HostGator web hosting plan.

* Setup Anonymous FTP Access
Adjust setting on how anonymous FTP users use FTP. In truth, most of us will not even be using this HostGator FTP feature.

If you are not comfortable with using FTP directly through your cpanel at Hostagtor, you can use what is called an FTP Client. For my money (actually its FREE), the best one out there (and it plays nice with HostGator) is FileZilla, and you can download it here.
