HostGator Shared Web Hosting and CPU Quota Limits

HostGator’s shared web hosting packages, like all other similar companies, puts a quota limit on CPU usage for their customers. HostGator’s CPU quota limits is set at 25%. But before we go any further, what does HostGator as well as other web servers mean by CPU usage? CPU usage basically means the amount load resources your site using over a certain amount of time.

Why HostGator Uses CPU Quota Limits

Host Gator uses CPU quota limits for this simple reason: On a shared web server, clients (like Us!) may have our own IP addresses and separate sites, but we actually shared the resources (CPU) with dozens of other sites. So in theory, if CPU usage were not set, one client could hog too much CPU, which would effect how fast and efficently our own site would operate. We wouldn’t like that, would we? HostGator takes care of this problem by setting the above mentioned CPU limit, which is within the range of what other web hosting companies do.

What happens when a HostGator site goes over 25% CPU usage? They will receive an email letting the owner know they have exceeded CPU use for some if the scripts they are running. If the problem continues, their site their site will be suspended for no more then ten minutes. This is not a good thing, but don’t worry because unlike some other hosts, HostGator staff will work patiently with you.

On small and medium sized sites, such as with small businesses and churches, CPU overload is a rare occurrence. One can check what scripts are having problems by going into the HostGator cPanel>Public_Html>Tmp>CPU Overload. Here you will see what pages or plugins are causing the problem. In the unlikely event this happens to your HostzGator site, you can ask HostGator for help and they will assist you in eliminating the problem.
